The San Francisco 49ers are grateful to have a healthy Christian McCaffrey back as their running back of the present.
They might need to find a running back of the future, though, because CMC is getting up there in years after dealing with injuries, as well.
SI’s Grant Cohn has proposed a solution: Trade a mid-round pick for Jets running back Breece Hall.
“Hall played college football at Iowa State where he played with Brock Purdy, so they’re extremely familiar with each other,” Cohn writes. “In addition, Hall would be a terrific fit in the 49ers offense because he does lots of the things that Christian McCaffrey does.”
The Purdy connection is a great point. It never hurts to reunite old friends.
Hall had 1,359 yards from scrimmage in 2024 and 1,585 yards from scrimmage in 2023.
“He’s an excellent receiver and an explosive runner,” Cohn writes. “He’s like a younger version of McCaffrey but not as good.”

Hall has been involved in trade rumors thanks to comments from new coach Aaron Glenn suggesting the Jets want to give longer looks to their other running backs.
Maybe a fresh start is what Hall needs.
“He has played for a bad team his entire career,” Cohn writes. “We saw what a change of scenery did for McCaffrey when he left Carolina for the 49ers. In addition, Saquon Barkley’s career finally took off when he left the Giants for the Eagles. Maybe Hall could be the heir apparent to McCaffrey in the 49ers offense.”
It certainly seems like a call worth making for the 49ers.
