49ers nearly lost star to Steelers, but new contract saved the day in San Francisco

The San Francisco 49ers had a busy offseason.

It almost had a different tone. One of their fan favorites nearly left for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In the end, Kyle Juszczyk signed to stay in San Francisco.

But first, he took a visit to Pittsburgh.

“It was a different experience,” Juszczyk told The Athletic’s Vic Tafur. “It was a chance to go look at a different team and I felt a lot of love from them. I got excited for a second about what possibly could be, about new beginnings and fitting into a new offense, all that type of stuff. And I genuinely enjoyed my time with Arthur Smith and Mike Tomlin so much. I have so much respect for those guys. But at the end of the day, it just wasn’t enough to trump what I had in San Francisco. I just couldn’t pull the plug.”

Juszczyk plays fullback, which of course isn’t as key in the modern NFL as it once was. But he’s also probably the best at that position in the league.

The 49ers line Juszczyk up all over the formation. He’s a true offensive weapon, even now.

Losing him to the Steelers would’ve been rough for San Francisco and would’ve been great for the Steelers.

But in the end, Juszczyk chose to stay put.
