49ers getting ‘a lot of trade inquiries’ about leading 2024 rusher

With free agency gearing up to begin next week, the San Francisco 49ers have reportedly been flooded with trade inquiries about their leading rusher from last season.

According to a report by NBC Sports’ Matthew Berry, 49ers running back Jordan Mason has been generating significant trade interest this offseason following a breakout campaign in 2024.

“There’s actually been a lot of trade inquiries about Mason,” Berry wrote on Tuesday. “Don’t be surprised if Jordan Mason, who proved he could be a legit starting RB in the NFL last season, gets dealt. This is just me talking but I feel like it’s not a NFL draft until Kyle Shanahan has taken a late round RB.”

Mason gained 789 yards and scored three touchdowns on 153 carries last season in six starts for the injured Christian McCaffrey. The 25-year-old was averaging more than five yards per carry last year before he suffered a season-ending ankle injury in early December.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter also discussed Mason being on the trading block during his appearance Tuesday on The Pat McAfee Show.

“But the Niners — again, for them to play in the free-agency sandbox — they’re going to have to find ways to clear out salary,” Schefter said. “Whether that’s through Brandon Aiyuk or Jordan Mason or any other player who they don’t bring back or let go. They have to find ways to get money to help field the kind of roster that they want.”

Slated to become a restricted free agent, Mason is on his way to a salary increase after earning $985,000 last year. The 49ers must offer him at least $3.267 million before March 12 in order to retain the right of first refusal. The 49ers could also tender Mason at first-round compensation for $7.466 million and second-round compensation for $5.35 million.
