The San Francisco 49ers’ defense is going to look significantly different in 2025 due to a significant change.
This offseason, the 49ers parted ways with defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen and replaced him with Robert Saleh.
Saleh was the 49ers’ defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020 before taking the New York Jets head coaching job.
With Saleh back in San Francisco, the defense should be able to get back to their winning ways, but they could use some more help.
While Saleh was coaching the Jets, he had a safety named Jordan Whitehead, who played for the team in New York for two seasons.

Whitehead is still a free agent, and Moe Moton from Bleacher Report thinks he could be a fit for the 49ers.
“As the Jets head coach, Saleh saw Whitehead perform at his best with the help of his former defensive coordinator, Jeff Ulbrich. The 49ers need a placeholder in one of their starting safety spots as Malik Mustapha recovers from a torn ACL,” Moton wrote. “Mustapha went down in January, so he’s likely to miss several weeks in the upcoming season. Whitehead, who’s already familiar with Saleh’s system, could step in as a spot starter.”
Whitehead has spent seven seasons in the NFL, five with Tampa Bay, and knows what it takes to win a Super Bowl, winning in 2020.
Whitehead could bring his Super Bowl experience to the 49ers, who are looking to get over their two Super Bowl losses in the last six years.
