49ers’ 23-year-old rookie could be cut after training camp

The San Francisco 49ers opened training camp this week, and they are trying to get the bad taste of the 2024 season out of their mouth.

After the 49ers were a few plays away from winning the Super Bowl in 2023, the team took a step back last year.

San Francisco had a record of 6-11, much of which was attributed to running back Christian McCaffrey playing in only four games.

McCaffrey appears to be healthy heading into training camp this summer, and he is poised to return to the player he was before the 2024 season. The 49ers could be the team to beat in the NFC.

The 49ers upgraded their running back room this offseason with the drafting of Oregon’s running back Jordan James, which could cause a few other running backs to look for new jobs after training camp.

Parker Hurley from SI On 49ers thinks running back Corey Kiner could be a roster cut this summer.

“If you have followed Kyle Shanahan in the past, you know that he loves his lesser-known, but harder-working running backs. Corey Kiner was highly productive at Cincinnati but fell to a UDFA, in part because this running back draft class was so loaded,” Hurley wrote. “He landed into a great scheme fit, and his elusiveness could go a long way in this offense. Even if he does not make the roster, he should look strong in the preseason.”

Kiner is a 23-year-old running back who rushed for 1,153 yards and four touchdowns at the University of Cincinnati last year.

Kiner could be a practice squad player if he does get cut from the 53-man roster, and could see time on the active roster in the season at some point.
