4 Nations Face-Off trophy, explained: How NHL’s new prize compares to Stanley Cup in height, weight and more

A new tournament in the NHL comes with a new prize.

The league revealed the 4 Nations Face-Off trophy just before the start of the tournament, giving fans a glimpse of what players will lift when the brand new event wraps up at TD Garden on Thursday.

The trophy blends some of the classic elements of other NHL awards with some special effects geared toward the 4 Nations Face-Off, including multiple mentions of all four countries. In the end, only one will get to walk away with the prize.

Here’s a look at the 4 Nations Face-Off trophy ahead of Thursday’s championship game between the USA and Canada.

4 Nations Face-Off trophy, explained

The 4 Nations Face-Off trophy was created by MST Bronze Limited, which is run by a father and son, and revealed one day before the start of the tournament:

The NHL released a behind-the-scenes video at the start of the tournament explaining the design process behind the trophy.

“We really wanted something that was contemporary in design but also was unique and authentic to this one-of-a-kind event,” senior manager of NHLPA creative solutions Robert Grier said.

“The conjoined four handles coming together representing each one of the countries”

The trophy features a small emblem from each country’s uniform in addition to a mention of each country at the top of each of the four handles, personalizing the award rather than creating a generic cup.

MST Bronze Limited aimed to create a trophy with a “mix of traditional and contemporary,” the company said. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime event that we wanted to create a direction for the over-arching final product to reflect that.”

Details are limited on the height and weight of the trophy, beyond what fans can see from the images of the prize.

Images of fans posing with the trophy at the 4 Nations Fan Fest during the tournament give the best glimpse into the size of the award, and it’s certainly not as light as a feather.

The Stanley Cup comes in at 35.25 inches tall and a hefty 34.5 pounds, though it would be tough to compare the two trophies without official measurements on the 4 Nations Face-Off prize.

Only time will tell whether any player or coach has a hard time lifting the trophy, but the adrenaline of winning a likely heated 4 Nations Face-Off championship game might make the weight of the prize irrelevant.

4 Nations Face-Off trophy name

The 4 Nations Face-Off trophy doesn’t have a name at this point, and the NHL hasn’t announced a timeline for a decision on the name.
