3 former Yankees get incredible United States honor

The New York Yankees have featured so many prominent ballplayers that it’s hard to keep track.

But three of them from the last two decades will soon be on a stage big enough to bring back cool memories.

The United States announced its entire World Baseball Classic coaching staff on Friday. The club will be managed by Mark DeRosa, a former utility man who led the group to a silver medal in 2023.

The three former Yankees big league stars on staff: Andy Pettitte, Brian McCann and Matt Holliday.

Pettite will be the U.S. pitching coach. The five-time World Series champion was just a 22nd-round pick by New York in 1990 but put together a legendary career.

The Yankees retired Pettitte’s No. 46 in 2015. He had 19 postseason wins, including five in World Series games.

Holliday has been named as the United States hitting coach. He was a star to begin his big league career with the Rockies, then put up MVP-level seasons with the Cardinals.

At 37, Holliday joined the Yankees for a single season, in which he hit 19 home runs in 2017.

McCann is listed as an assistant manager, one of two announced along with former Rangers star Michael Young and long-time big league coach and manager Fredi Gonzalze. Most of the catcher’s big league stardom came with the Atlanta Braves.

In 2014, McCann joined the Yankees and stayed for three seasons. In his time with the Bronx Bombers, McCann slugged 69 home runs.

Fredi Gonzalez is actually another Yankees connection on the staff. He spent six seasons in the minor league system for New York but never made it to the show.

This will be the sixth edition of the WBC. It’s scheduled to run from March 5-17 in 2026. Japan is the defending champion, having defeated the United States in the title game in 2023.
