
Tyler Johnson has announced his retirement from the game of hockey today.
The 5’8” undrafted forward from Spokane was one of the best small players of his era. In 13 seasons, Johnson registered 193 goals and 240 assists for 433 points in 747 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins.
He was a known clutch playoff performer, with 32 goals and 33 assists for 65 points in 116 career postseason games, all with Tampa. This included a dynamic run in the 2015 playoffs, where he tied Patrick Kane with 23 points for the most in the playoffs that year for the Stanley Cup finalist Bolts.
Johnson’s best years came with Tampa, where he played 9 seasons. He touted 161 goals and 200 assists for 361 points in 589 games during his tenure there. This included back to back Stanley Cup Championships with them in 2020 and 2021.
After his stint in Tampa he played 3 years in Chicago, amassing 32 goals and 38 assists for 70 points in 149 games.
The 34 year old forward only played in 9 games with the Boston Bruins this past season, tallying 2 assists.
He also won championships with the WHL’s Spokane Chiefs in 2008 and the AHL’s Norfolk Admirals in 2012.
He was prominent in the International hockey scene as well, having won a gold medal in the 2010 World Junior Championships with Team USA. He tallied 2 goals and 3 assists in 7 games during that tourney run.
