Yankees-Angels blockbuster would bring $39M All-Star to New York

The New York Yankees will be looking to make improvements to their team near the MLB trade deadline. They have some glaring needs and could find valuable players on expiring contracts.

One of the Yankees’ biggest needs is in the starting rotation. They have been without Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil all year. Marcus Stroman seems to have run out of chances as well. Pinestripe Nation’s Sara Molnick suggested the Yankees swing a trade with the Los Angeles Angels for Tyler Anderson.

“If durability and consistency are what Brian Cashman is prioritizing, Tyler Anderson’s profile fits snugly into the Yankees’ plans,” wrote Molnick. “The veteran lefty has quietly carved out a reliable track record in recent years. Since the start of 2023, Anderson owns a 3.78 ERA across nearly 400 innings in Los Angeles.”

Anderson has a 3.39 ERA in 11 starts this season. He could be a great piece next to Max Fried and Gil, when Gil returns. His biggest asset has been his ability to stay healthy.

Since 2021, he has made 25-plus starts every season. He is a two-time All-Star and is going to be a free agent after the season. He signed a three-year, $39 million deal before the 2023 season. However, if the Angels decide to become sellers, Anderson should be a hot name on the trade block.

“Although Anderson’s advanced metrics, such as xFIP (4.82), suggest he’s overdue for regression, he’s consistently outperformed those expectations,” wrote Molnick. “A pending free agent on a non-contending Angels team that remains a long shot for the postseason (+1800 odds via DraftKings), Anderson could be available without emptying the Yankees’ farm.”
