White Sox were looking to get other top prospects from Red Sox in Garrett Crochet trade

The Boston Red Sox made a blockbuster trade earlier this month, acquiring left-handed starter Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox for a package of four prospects headlined by Kyle Teel and Braden Montgomery.

While Boston gave up two of their top five (and four of their top 18) prospects in the deal, Chicago had been searching for more in return for Crochet’s services.

According to the Boston Globe’s Alex Speier, the Red Sox and White Sox began discussing Crochet last offseason before the pitcher had moved from the bullpen to the rotation. Then, when talks re-opened at the trade deadline, Chicago was looking for “a package built around Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer.”

Speier reported that chief baseball officer Craig Breslow never offered Anthony, Mayer and Kristian Campbell, Boston’s top three prospects, in their negotiations.

The Red Sox already gave up a ton in the trade, and that was expected after Crochet’s impressive 2024 campaign where he posted a 3.58 ERA, 1.069 WHIP and 12.9 K/9 in his first season as a starter. However, a deal involving Anthony, Mayer or Campbell would’ve been seen as a much bigger overpay than the deal that was actually agreed to.

Now, Boston still has their top three prospects and a budding star left-handed pitcher under contract for at least the next two seasons. That’s a pretty good place to be.
