Luis Robert Jr. has felt like he’s been in trade rumors since Opening Day, and really since last season.
That’s what happens for a talented player with five tools who is playing for a team, the Chicago White Sox, who are a long ways off from contention.
Despite that, though, Robert may not actually get traded.
“Although the White Sox have spoken with a number of teams about Luis Robert Jr., sources say it’s more likely he stays with Chicago through the Trade Deadline,” MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand wrote on X.
The key to this decision-making is all contained in Robert’s contract.
In both 2026 and 2027, Robert has a team option on his deal. Both are worth $20 million.

That means the White Sox can activate those options and pay Robert $20 million to play for them in 2026, and potentially another $20 million to play for them in 2027.
With that remaining club control, Robert would also align as a possible trade target at next year’s trade deadline when he’ll still have a year-and-a-half remaining on his deal.
“The White Sox would likely pick up his $20M option for 2026 and hope for more of what they’ve seen over the past month,” Feinsand wrote.

Robert has heated up after more than a year of struggles dating back to last season.
He’s been a popular trade topic for New York Mets fans in particular. The Mets could certainly use a centerfield upgrade, and this latest development isn’t one that they’ll be a fan of.
But the White Sox clearly see a better way to maximize Robert’s value. With potentially affordable player options (relative to his immense talent), Robert isn’t someone who should be rushed to be traded away. Chicago wants to see what the future with Robert might hold.
