Lille vs Lyon prediction, odds, best bets, TV channel, live stream for Ligue 1 Friday match

Two storied clubs desperate for points to save disappointing seasons meet in northern France as LOSC Lille host Olympique Lyonnais in Ligue 1 action.

These two clubs both consider themselves perrennial top-four contenders, but neither features in the Champions League places at the moment. Things are looking a bit more promising for Lille, who sit sixth in the standings, just a point behind Stade Rennes in fifth and five behind third-placed Monaco, who occupy the final UCL qualification place.

Lyon are in a far more precarious position, sitting 10th in the table, five behind their hosts today. Lyon have finished outside the European places in two of the last three seasons, and risk further damaging their reputation with another poor placement.

These two teams matched up in the Coupe de France a month ago, with Lyon advancing on penalties after a 2-2 draw, but Lille have been positive since that defeat, just a Lionel Messi 95th-minute winner from sporting an unbeaten last four matches. Lyon, meanwhile, copped an embarrassing defeat to Angers in the aftermath of that Cup victory, and they plodded to a scoreless draw last time out.

Lille vs Lyon prediction, odds

  • Moneyline lean: Draw (+260)
  • Against the spread lean: Lyon +0.5 (-120)
  • Score prediction: Lille 1-1 Lyon

Lille are tabbed as minus-odds favourites in this clash of French giants, but Lyon have the striker in better form as Alexandre Lacazette has bagged eight goals in his last seven games across all competitions. Jonathan David of Lille is looking to catch up to that run, as he’s scored five in his last five and found the target last weekend against Lens.

The oddsmakers expect that these two teams will play to a shootout, but that’s not what history says, as four of the last five games between these sides in Ligue 1 play have featured two or fewer goals, including one scoreless draw and two other 1-0 results.

Lille vs Lyon: best bet

  • Pick: Under 2.5 goals
  • Odds: +105 (BetMGM)

These two teams have great attacking talent, but neither has been able to cash in regularly this season, and with plus odds on the under, it’s a no brainer here. Lyon were blanked by Lorient last time out despite 17 shots, with only five placed on frame, and they’ve been held in check by the likes of Clermont Foot, Nantes, Brest, and Strasbourg so far in 2023.

Lille are in slightly better goalscoring form, but they’ve also been stifled by Clermont Foot and Brest in the new year, plus a goose egg against Nice and a poor showing last time out against Lens where Jonathan David’s 69th minute equaliser was kind enough to provide a meager point.

Add in the aforementioned recent history between the two clubs, and there’s all the ingredients for another cagey affair here in northern France.

Lille vs Lyon prop bet

  • Pick: Jonathan David first goalscorer
  • Odds: +333 (BetMGM)

Having +115 odds is tough to swallow for an anytime goal scorer, but Jonathan David is the Lille attack, so we’re boosting this pick to first goalscorer. While we don’t often recommend first/last goalscorer since the order of goals in a match is largely down to chance, but in this game, where few goals are expected, it’s worth the leap in risk for the appropriate return.

David this season has 33 per cent of Lille’s entire expected goals haul, and while he didn’t score in the reverse fixture, he put up 0.76 xG in the match, meaning he was used to great effect and just couldn’t find the back of the net.

However, he’s been far more effective in the first half of games this year, scoring five of his last eight goals before the break.
