NASCAR lineup at Atlanta: Starting order, pole for Ambetter Health 400 based on qualifying results

The NASCAR Cup Series heads south for its fifth race of the 2023 regular season, the Ambetter Health 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Atlanta has proved to be a launching pad for some of the best drivers in NASCAR, both past and present. It seems it is a place where stars are born.

William Byron captured his second Cup Series checkered flag at Atlanta last year. He has proceeded to light up the circuit, and he heads into this weekend’s race with back-to-back wins at Las Vegas and Phoenix.

And although Byron sits at 29th in the standings — he, Kyle Larson and Alex Bowman were docked 100 regular-season points and 10 playoff points each after NASCAR found Hendrick Motorsports had illegally modified their cars’ hood louvers — the 25-year-old seems as good a bet as any to compete on the 1.54-mile oval.

But will Byron win? That’s anybody’s guess. A better predictor of success: the results of Saturday’s qualifying, which will determine who is the pole sitter for Sunday’s race.

With that, here’s what you need to know about the starting order for Sunday’s race.

Who won the pole for the Ambetter Health 400 in 2023?

Joey Logano captured the pole in Saturday’s final qualifying round, blazing around the track at an average speed of 177.734 mph. This is his 28th career pole, his second of the season and his second at Atlanta. His first pole at the track came in 2015.

The top eight spots in the field belong by Ford cars: three each from Team Penske and Stewart-Haas Racing and two from RFK Racing.

“I’m hoping it’s transferable to the race,” Logano said, per “I think it’s pretty obvious at this point throughout the field where certain manufacturers have gone over the offseason with some of their changes to the noses and whatnot. It’s pretty obvious that this is kind of our wheelhouse — when you come to superspeedways or bigger race tracks like Fontana, Michigan, Atlanta, Talladega, Daytona. I think those will probably be our strongest race tracks and it kind of showed again today.”

Josh Berry will reprise his role in the Hendrick Motorsports No. 9 car, once again replacing Chase Elliott, who is recovering from surgery to repair a leg injury he suffered in a snowboarding accident in Colorado.
