Gervonta Davis vs. Hector Luis Garcia undercard: Complete list of fights before main event in 2022 boxing match

Heading back home to Maryland, Gervonta Davis (27-0) puts his WBA (Regular) lightweight title on the line against Hector Luis Garcia (16-0 with three no-contests) on January 7. The fight takes place inside the Capital One Arena.

Known for selling out venues, Davis is ready to show the world he is ready for a future Ryan Garcia clash. On the card with him will be a former champion in Demetrius Andrade, and the future of the welterweight division in Jaron Ennis.

“This is really important for me. It’s huge to open up the opportunity for other fighters to showcase their skills on the big stage,” Davis said at a pre-fight press conference. “When you make your mark in the sport, it’s about coming back and showing other people that it can happen for them… There are a lot of young fighters coming behind me and I just want to be able to give them the platform that they deserve.”

Jaron Ennis faces Karen Chukhadzhian for the interim IBF welterweight title. A 2015 Golden Gloves gold medalist, Ennis (29-0, 1 no-contest), made his pro debut in 2016. “Boots” won the WBC-USNBC Silver welterweight title in 2018 against Armando Alvarez. Ennis and Chris van Heerden fought to a no-contest for the IBO welterweight title. The latter suffered a cut from an accidental head clash during the fight.

From there, Ennis won three straight fights via knockout. His last fight was a second-round win over Custio Clayton in May. Boxing fans have been hoping he is next in line for a title shot against Errol Spence Jr. or Terence Crawford.

“I definitely feel like I already should have had my world title shot,” Ennis stated at a pre-fight press conference. “I’ve been calling out the champions for years. I’ve been ready, and they’re just making it worse for themselves by making me wait longer… Eventually, the champions are going to have no choice but to fight me. If it’s not the champions next, then I’ll take a Keith Thurman or a Yordenis Ugas fight in a heartbeat.”

Chukhadzhian (21-1) made his pro debut in 2015. After losing his second pro right, the Ukrainian has won 20 in a row. His last fight was a win via retirement over Blake Minto in July. It will be his first time fighting in the United States.

Another welterweight bout will feature Rashidi Ellis vs. Roiman Villa. Ellis (24-0) made his pro debut in 2013. In 2016 he beat Eddie Gomez for the IBF North American welterweight title and beat Gomez again in 2019 for the WBA Continental Americas welterweight title.

After beating Alexis Rocha in 2020 for the WBC International welterweight title, Ellis returned and beat Jose Marruffo back in July via TKO.

“The goal is to take over the division in 2023,” Ellis stated. “It starts with this fight. I just have to be ready for my opponent, because I’m sure he’s going to be extremely motivated, just like I am.”

Villa (25-1) made his pro debut in 2015. He won his first 19 fights via knockout before suffering his first loss in 2019 against Marcos Villasana. Since then, Villa has won six in a row, his last bout a unanimous decision win in September against Janelson Figueroa Bocachica.

Opening the card will be former WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade vs. Demond Nicholson in super-middleweight action. Andrade (31-0) made his pro debut in 2008. The 2007 Pan American Games silver medalist won the WBO light-middleweight title in 2013 against Vanes Martirosyan. In 2017 he won the WBA super-welterweight title from Jack Culcay.

“Boo Boo” moved to middleweight and won the WBO middleweight title in 2018 against Walter Kautondokwa. He defended the belt five times, his last fight a TKO win against Jason Quigley in November 2021. The WBO ordered him to fight mandatory challenger Janibek Alimkhanuly. Following postponements and Andrade withdrawing from a previously-requested fight against Zach Parker, Andrade vacated the belt in July. Alimkhanuly won the title against Denzel Bentley in November.

“I’m feeling good. This is a new journey,” Andrade stated. “I’m looking to become a three-division champion. I’m thankful to have this opportunity to showcase my skill and talent on this beautiful card. At the end of the day, nothing guarantees a Canelo Alvarez fight. Right now I’m looking at Caleb Plant, David Benavidez, and Jermall Charlo. I want all those big names… I did my thing at 154 and 160, and now I want to move on to this journey at super middleweight and make it happen.”

Nicholson (26-4-1) made his pro debut in 2013. He won the WBC United States super-middleweight title in 2018 against Isaac Rodrigues. Losing to Edgar Berlanga in 2021, Nicholson has won three in a row. His last fight was a TKO win against Christopher Brooker in August.
