Two power-hitting rivals will settle their beef in the ring on March 25. Former world champions David Benavidez and Caleb Plant battle it out in what could be a brutal super-middleweight classic.
The fight takes place inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The winner is expected to face undisputed super-middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez.
With 23 wins via knockout, Benavidez is a true force of nature. He won the WBC super-middleweight title in 2017 but was stripped of it when he tested positive for cocaine. Returning in 2019, Benavidez beat Anthony Dirrell for the belt. His last fight was a TKO win against David Lemieux in May 2022 for the interim WBC title.
This rivalry has been going on for quite a while. Plant has called him out at various points. Benavidez has shown up in the front row at Plant’s fights to egg him on.

“This has been a fight in the making for the last five years, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. I’m at my best right now mentally and physically. On March 25, I finally get to put hands on Caleb Plant,” Benavidez stated at the pre-fight press conference. “When you’re on the ground bleeding, you’ll learn how to respect a real fighter. I’m what you want to be. You’re a chump.”
A 2011 Golden Gloves gold medalist, Plant turned pro in 2014. An amateur kickboxer at one point, Plant beat Jose Uzcategui in 2019 for the IBF super-middleweight belt. He defended it multiple times before Canelo beat him for the belt in November 2021.
Returning to action in October, Plant violently knocked out Dirrell in the ninth round. He looks to finish Benavidez once and for all on fight night.
“We’re both at the top of the division,” Plant stated. “This rivalry only started because we agree to disagree on who’s better. And that’s fine, he should feel like that. That’s how great fighters are supposed to feel. It’s slowly built up over time… I never said David’s a bad fighter because I have no interest in fighting bad fighters. I want to fight good fighters and make big fights. This is the best fight that could be made in the division.”
