Mock Draft: Saints still need QB beyond Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler in 2026

In April, when the New Orleans Saints selected Tyler Shough with the 40th pick, he became the franchise’s highest-selected quarterback since Archie Manning was picked No. 2 in the 1971 NFL draft. Fans may not have to wait another 50 or 60 years to see the team selecting another QB in the first or second round. That might happen in the 2026 NFL draft.

The Saints currently have Spencer Rattler and Shough as QB1 and QB2, respectively, but the team’s long-term solution at the position remains uncertain. According to CBS Sports analyst Mike Renner’s 2026 NFL mock draft, the Saints will likely look to add another quarterback next year.

Renner projects the Saints will select LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier with the No. 2 pick in the 2026 draft. He pointed out that New Orleans’ general manager Mickey Loomis could have an easy decision if Nussmeier performs well this fall. According to Renner, that’s because “Saints offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier knows the LSU quarterback’s strengths and weaknesses better than anyone else in America.”

“Garrett’s NFL bloodlines show with his pocket presence and understanding of how to play the position,” Renner said.

Doubts persist across the NFL that both Shough and Rattler will establish themselves as clear franchise quarterbacks. This uncertainty will make adding a potential franchise QB a priority for the Saints as they seek stability under center.

The Saints will open the 2025 season with Spencer Rattler as their starter. It will be crucial for Rattler to perform well, as Tyler Shough is right behind him, eager to claim the starting role. Both quarterbacks will face pressure to capitalize on their opportunities. If they fail to do so, the Saints organization is likely to explore other options at the position.
