Knicks’ Tyler Kolek reveals which veterans guided him through his rookie season

Knicks point guard Tyler Kolek had an interesting rookie season.

Former head coach Tom Thibodeau is notorious for keeping a tight leash on his rookies, and that was certainly the case for Kolek and Pacome Dadiet last season. After being selected with the 34th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, the Marquette product appeared in 41 games, seeing most of his playing time when superstar Jalen Brunson was sidelined with an ankle injury in March.

Despite flashing at times, including a stretch of 31 assists to only one turnover, Kolek never received a legitimate role for the 2024-25 Knicks. He didn’t have to go through it alone, though, and during an interview with SNY’s Ian Begley, he revealed which veterans guided him throughout his up-and-down rookie year.

Cam Payne and Delon Wright Took Kolek Under Their Wing

Kolek cited veteran guards Cam Payne and Delon Wright as his guides during his first year in the NBA, as throughout their long careers, they’ve had to deal with situations where they were relegated to the bench, without a well-defined role.

“Last year, Cam Payne really helped me out, you know, kind of in that backup guard role coming in,” Kolek told Begley. “He’s really experienced in that role and being able to help me with my mindset coming into the game, how I should be attacking it. Another guy, Delon Wright, too. You know, those two veteran guys are so important.”

Kolek will look to see more use during the upcoming 2025-26 season, as new head coach Mike Brown is known for his player development skills. It’s a stark contrast from how Thibodeau ran the team, as you didn’t receive minutes until he trusted you. Brown, on the other hand, is not afraid of giving his youngsters a chance.
