Winter Classic past winners: Complete list of teams and hosts of the NHL’s outdoor game

From Sidney Crosby’s shootout winner at the inaugural Winter Classic to Marco Sturm’s overtime goal at the 2010 event, the Bruins and Penguins have given NHL fans a plethora of memorable moments from the NHL’s premier outdoor event.

This year, the two franchises come together and square off against each other for the first time, as the Bruins host the Penguins at Fenway Park for the 2023 Winter Classic.

This is Boston’s fourth Winter Classic appearance and third time hosting the event. Previously, the Bruins played at the 2010, 2016 and 2019 games. The Penguins, who played in the inaugural showcase in 2008, are playing in their third Winter Classic. It’s the first time Pittsburgh will partake in the outdoor festivities since 2011.

The B’s are 2-1-0 in their three previous appearances, defeating the Flyers in 2010 and the Blackhawks in 2019 while losing to the Canadiens in 2016. Opposing them are a Penguins team that owns a 1-1-0 record all-time at the Winter Classic, winning the inaugural one in 2008 over the Sabres and losing in 2011 to the Capitals.
