Winter Classic 2023 weather: Warm temperatures expected in Boston for Bruins vs. Penguins NHL outdoor game

The 2023 Winter Classic is just days away, as the Bruins and Penguins get set to play at Fenway Park in Boston.

While winters in Boston can be rough between the cold temperatures and snow, that is not expected to be the case for the outdoor game. The conditions in Boston are going to be a bit on the warmer side and if the forecast holds up, it would actually be one of the warmer Winter Classics in history.

It is set to be by far the warmest out of the two previous Winter Classics in the Boston area. In 2010, the temperature was 39.6 degrees at puck drop at Fenway and in 2016, it was 41 degrees in Foxborough when the Winter Classic was at Gillette Stadium.

Source: National Weather Service

It is shaping up to be pretty good conditions for the 2023 Winter Classic on Monday. There is no rain or snow in the forecast, and the winds are expected to top out at around 6 mph.

The temperature could be the lone issue, but it would only impact the ice. The forecast calls for a temperature of 51 degrees at puck drop time in Boston.

What was the warmest Winter Classic?

The warmest Winter Classic came in 2020. It wasn’t much of a surprise, as the game was held in Dallas, Texas, marking the first Winter Classic to be held in a warm-climate location.

The temperature at puck drop was around 57 degrees at the Cotton Bowl when the Stars and Predators played in the New Year’s Day outdoor game.

What was the coldest Winter Classic?

The coldest Winter Classic was last year’s matchup between the Wild and the Blues in Minnesota. The temperature at puck drop was -5.7 degrees, and the game was the first Winter Classic to be played at night, starting at 7 p.m. ET, which did not help the weather conditions.

It was so cold that the crew at Target Field actually had to heat the ice for the 2022 Winter Classic. According to, this was the reason why:

The floor of the Winter Classic ice rink is made of 283 aluminum ice pans. A mobile refrigeration unit pumps glycol through pipes to the pans and back to the truck to transfer heat… When the air temperature is above the optimum ice temperature, the glycol and aluminum pans transfer heat away from the ice. But when the air temperature is below the optimum ice temperature, it transfers heat to the ice.
