Canada begins the knockout stage today, as the defending World Juniors champions face Slovakia in the quarterfinals. 

The Canadians ended group play as the No. 2 team in Group A. After losing to Czechia in its opener, Canada secured three straight victories, including a New Year’s Eve win over Sweden to leapfrog into second. 

It’s been the Connor Bedard show in Halifax. The 2023 draft prospect is not just cementing his status as the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft, but is putting himself in the Canadian and World Juniors history books.

So far, the 17-year-old has tied the Canadian World Juniors record for career goals, career points and points at a single tournament. He is first among all skaters at the 2023 tournament in goals (six), assists (12) and points (18).

However, Slovakia presents no easy task. The Slovaks were the only team to knock off the USA in group play. Slovakia finished third in Group B, with wins over the United States and Latvia and losses to Finland and Switzerland. 

Canadiens 2022 first-round pick Filip Mesar and Peter Repcik are leading the Slovak offense. Both forwards have five points entering the knockout stage.
