NHL Winter Classic live stream: How to watch Bruins vs. Penguins without cable in 2023

The NHL is back at Fenway Park this year, as the historic ballpark is the home of the 2023 Winter Classic. 

The two teams are very familiar with the annual outdoor game, as the Bruins and Penguins are the participating squads in the event. It is the fourth Winter Classic for Boston and the third for Pittsburgh. 

There will be no shortage of star power at the game, with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin on one side against Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak on the other. 

Here is how fans can watch the 2023 Winter Classic without cable. 

How to stream the 2023 Winter Classic

  • Live Stream (U.S.): TNT App, Sling TV, DirecTV
  • Live Stream (Canada): SN NOW

Streaming options are available on TNT App, Sling TV, and DirecTV in the United States. 

Select NHL games on TNT will be available to stream in the United States. In total, 62 regular-season games will be shown on TNT and its networks, including doubleheaders on Wednesday nights. 

Those games can be streamed through a TV subscription in the TNT app and available on Sling TV. 

Sling TV offers NHL fans the ability to have access to more than 60 percent of the league’s nationally televised games which can be streamed on TNT, ESPN and the NHL Network for the best price.

In addition, those in Canada can stream the action on SN NOW. 

How to watch the 2023 Winter Classic on TV

Fans can watch the game on TNT in the United States.

Canadians can watch on Sportsnet or on TVA Sports, where they will have the French-language broadcast. 

When is the 2023 Winter Classic?

  • Date: Monday, Jan. 2
  • Time: 2 p.m. ET

This season’s Winter Classic will not take place on New Year’s Day like in most previous years. With the holiday falling on a Sunday, the game instead will be played the next day, Monday, Jan. 2.

It is the third time the NHL has pushed the Winter Classic back one day when New Year’s Day is on a Sunday. 

Who is playing in the 2023 Winter Classic?

This year’s game will be played between the Bruins and the Penguins. 

This is Boston’s fourth Winter Classic appearance and third time hosting the event. The Bruins previously played in 2010, 2016 and 2019. The B’s are 2-1-0 in the three previous occasions, defeating the Flyers in 2010 and the Blackhawks in 2019 while losing to the Canadiens in 2016.

The Penguins, who played in the inaugural event in 2008, are playing in their third Winter Classic. It’s the first time Pittsburgh will partake in the outdoor festivities since 2011. The Pens are 1-1-0 all-time in Winter Classics, winning the first one in 2008 over the Sabres and losing in 2011 to the Capitals.

The 2023 Winter Classic will be played at Fenway Park, home of the MLB’s Boston Red Sox. 

It is the first time that the NHL is repeating a venue for the Winter Classic. Fenway Park was the home of the 2010 Winter Classic when the Bruins hosted the Flyers. 

It is the third time that Boston is hosting the event. In addition to 2010, the Bruins faced the Canadiens in the 2016 Winter Classic at Gillette Stadium, home of the Patriots. 

2023 Winter Classic jerseys

The jerseys are one of the best parts of the Winter Classic, as teams design specific sweaters for the event. 

The Bruins and Penguins revealed their 2023 Winter Classic jerseys in late November.

Boston is utilizing one of the team’s previous bear logos, commonly known as the “Meth Bear”, as its primary logo. The bear head was used as a shoulder patch for the team’s jerseys starting in the 1976-77 season and was a part of the uniform until 1995.

Pittsburgh is throwing it all the way back to the 1920s with its “P” logo. The crest was worn by Pittsburgh’s original hockey team, the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates played from 1925 to 1930, when the franchise’s ownership group changed and the team was forced out of the city.

Previous Winter Classic locations

The Winter Classic has been around since 2008, with the exception of 2021 as the league did not have the event due to the delayed start of the season with the COVID-19 pandemic.

In total, 13 different stadiums have been used. Seven have been MLB fields, three have been NFL stadiums and three have been college football venues. 

This is the first time ever that the Winter Classic is repeating a previous venue. Fenway Park hosted the 2010 Winter Classic between the Bruins and the Flyers.
