Canada vs. Slovakia live score, highlights, updates from 2023 World Juniors quarterfinal

The knockout stage is here. Up first on Canada’s quest to repeat as World Juniors gold medalists is a quarterfinal matchup with Slovakia.

The defending champions finished group play as the No. 2 team in Group A. Canada responded well in group play after losing to Czechia in its World Juniors opener. The team won three straight games, including a New Year’s Eve win over Sweden to leapfrog into second.

“That’s how we want to play,” Connor Bedard said after the win over Sweden. “That first period was pretty dominating for us and that’s how we’re going to try to do it the next three games. If we can do it, we’ll be tough to play against.”

Bedard has been the hot topic throughout the tournament. The 17-year-old is first among all skaters at the competition in goals (six), assists (12) and points (18).

The 2023 draft prospect is also making history left and right draft. So far, Bedard has tied the Canadian World Juniors record for career goals, career points and points at a single tournament.

Canada was unable to get the top spot in its group, with Czechia finishing ahead of Canada in the standings. As a result, Canada draws a tougher quarterfinal matchup against a Slovakia team that already has one upset under its belt at the tournament.

The Slovaks were the only squad to knock off the USA in group play. The team finished third in Group B, with wins over the United States and Latvia and losses to Finland and Switzerland.
