Egypt vs DR Congo prediction, odds, expert football betting tips and best bets for AFCON Round of 16

Having qualified for the knockout stage by the skin of their teeth, Egypt looks to make the most of their renewed life as they take on the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Round of 16 at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday.

Needing to win their group stage finale against Cape Verde to ensure themselves of a knockout stage, Egypt played to a wild 2-2 draw which featured a stoppage-time goal for both nations.

Appearing to have been potentially eliminated by that adverse result, they were rescued when Ghana face-planted by conceding two stoppage-time goals to Mozambique in a 2-2 draw of their own, giving Egypt a second chance at the competition at the death.

The 2021 finalists must continue without injured talisman Mohamed Salah, matched up against Group F runners-up DR Congo who played to draws in all three group matches, including an impressive 1-1 result against title hopefuls Morocco in which the Leopards really should have come away with a win.

Egypt vs DR Congo prediction, odds

  • Moneyline lean: Draw (+220)
  • Score prediction: Egypt 1-1 DR Congo

While betting on draws by the moneyline always comes with an inherent risk of chaos, especially in this bonkers AFCON tournament, everything points to these two teams finishing level.

The two sides played to six draws in six combined group stage matches, a truly astonishing run of level scorelines. Both teams struggled mightily from a finishing perspective — Egypt couldn’t seem to get out of their way at times and will be missing Mohamed Salah, while DR Congo finished the group stage with just two goals despite ripping off 44 shots worth 5.01 xG.

It will be hard work for either team to find a winner. Egypt should come away with a win, even in the absence of Salah, and the plus odds for the Pharaohs feels enticing, but at this point, they haven’t shown enough ability to come away with a regulation victory for it to feel comfortable.

Egypt vs DR Congo: best bet

  • Pick: Both teams to score — YES
  • Odds: +120 (DraftKings)

While DR Congo flopped hard finishing chances across the group stage, they put up such a high volume of shots that they still managed to net goals in two of their three matches. Egypt conceded an outlandish six goals despite conceding just 1.77 xG through the group stage, but on the eye test, they were exceedingly mistake-prone in big moments.

Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy will miss the remainder of the tournament with a hamstring injury, having struggled mightily through the group stage and admitting he was not fully fit. His backup is 34-year-old Mohamed Gabaski, who also stepped in for El Shenawy in the 2021 competition. Gabaski has conceded 17 goals in 11 Egyptian Premier League matches with Bank Al Ahly, one of the most in the league, and while his 2021 heroics are memorable, there’s little indication he can reprise that role.

Even without Mohamed Salah, Egypt should manage to find the net, as they have good creative players in Omar Marmoush and Trezeguet, who will serve up chances to the likes of Mostafa Mohamed. Which leads us to…

Egypt vs DR Congo prop bet

  • Pick: Mostafa Mohamed anytime goal scorer
  • Odds: +280 (DraftKings)

With one goal in each of Egypt’s three group stage games, Mostafa Mohamed is well-positioned to finish as AFCON’s top goal scorer as long as the Pharaohs can win enough knockout stage games to keep him in the running. He currently sits joint-second behind the five goals of Emilio Nsue of Equatorial Guinea, who are talented but not thought to be title contenders, and Baghdad Bounedjah’s Algeria has already been shockingly eliminated.

Regardless of who is creating chances for Egypt, it’s always been Mohamed on the end of the opportunities. Mohamed Salah starred in their opener against Mozambique, Omar Marmoush picked up the reigns after Salah’s injury against Ghana, and then Trezeguet starred off the bench against Cape Verde.

With his three goals coming on 12 shots, the 26-year-old Nantes striker has both the volume and the finishing ability to net again here and up his case for the tournament’s Golden Boot, and in a tournament that has overall lacked goal scoring flair yet again, the odds are too delicious to pass up.
