Chelsea vs Leicester City prediction, odds, expert football betting tips and best bets for FA Cup quarterfinal

Knowing their chances at silverware have long since evaporated on all other fronts, Chelsea face a difficult prospect as they host Championship leaders Leicester City in the FA Cup quarterfinals on Sunday.

The Blues fell agonizingly short in the EFL Cup final, as a goal by Virgil van Dijk in the 118th minute sunk their chances at a trophy.

Sitting 11th in the Premier League table, Chelsea have little chances of making up enough ground to finish amongst the European places, so a run at domestic cup glory will have to do in Mauricio Pochettino’s first season at Stamford Bridge.

The Foxes are in pole position for promotion back to the Premier League as they sit atop the Championship table, but it’s been a dogfight the entire way. Leicester are three points clear of second-placed Leeds United and four above Ipswich Town in third, with nine matches remaining in the league season.

Leicester City dumped another Premier League side in Bournemouth out of the FA Cup in the previous round, while advancing past Millwall and Birmingham City before that. They gave Liverpool a good run earlier in the season in the EFL Cup third round, but fell 3-1 thanks to two Reds goals in the final 20 minutes.

Chelsea vs Leicester City prediction, odds

  • Moneyline lean: Chelsea (-225)
  • Score prediction: Chelsea 3-1 Leicester City

For whatever reason, Chelsea seem to have better consistency in the domestic cup tournaments than in league play, as the Blues have reached the semifinals of this competition in five of the last seven seasons, plus their trip to the EFL Cup final earlier this year as well.

The Blues took care of fellow Championship challengers Leeds United in the previous round, although it was nervy throughout, and so they should have the ability to see off the Foxes here, who will attack the game in a similar counter-attacking manner.

Chelsea vs Leicester City best bet

  • Pick: Under 9.5 total corners
  • Odds: -115 (BetMGM)

Chelsea have been truly abysmal from set-pieces this year, and it’s just flat out not their style of play — they sport a truly putrid 3.32 xG off of corners this season, generating just 35 shots from 132 deliveries. The Blues know this, and therefore don’t play to win corners, with their haul for 13th in the Premier League. They in turn don’t concede many either, with the 133 corners for opponents ranking sixth-least in the EPL.

Leicester City profile exactly the same — they don’t exactly play for corners, collecting the 15th fewest in the Championship, but they have conceded the third fewest as well. The team’s corner and set-piece taker Kieran Dewsbury-Hall has just 33 shot-creating actions from dead ball situations despite having taken 97 corners and 37 free-kicks, a poor return for a player who is serving up efforts on a platter — their main free-kick taker from shooting positions is Harry Winks, so Dewsbury-Hall is solely there to feed a delivery.

Leeds, who rank seventh in the Championship in corners won, picked up just four on the Blues while conceding five, so this should be a manageable total. The under 8.5 mark at +150 odds is enticing, but buying the extra wiggle room is valuable here.

Chelsea vs Leicester City flier bet

  • Pick: Cole Palmer to score and assist a goal
  • Odds: +495 (FanDuel)

While Cole Palmer was rested for the match against Leeds in the previous round, Mauricio Pochettino will know that with a semifinal spot at stake and their league standing in the toilet, he can’t afford to leave his most in-form playmaker on the bench in the only remaining chance for some competitive return.

Palmer has been electric this season, keeping Chelsea afloat and sparking their attack as other players flounder. The Man City academy graduate has assisted eight goals this season in Premier League play, and in five of the seven games in which he fed a teammate’s strike, he also found the net himself, including their previous game against Newcastle last weekend.

He has produced at least two shots and two key passes in three of Chelsea’s last four league games, averaging a combined 0.79 xG+xA per 90 minutes. While Palmer’s odds to score or assist individually are lacking value, combining the two seems to net a fair return against a Foxes side which can be beaten defensively.
