Chargers’ Justin Herbert reveals how he wants to be more like Bills’ MVP Josh Allen

Justin Herbert admires Josh Allen.

It’s not a bad thing, of course. The Los Angeles Chargers’ star quarterback recognizes the greatness that the Buffalo Bills’ league MVP brings to the field each and every day.

Herbert shared one key thought on Allen on Thursday, though, that should have Chargers fans especially intrigued.

The L.A. QB shared one aspect of Allen’s game that he admires as part of an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, and it sounds like Herbert wants to add it to his game a bit.

“What I respect about him is he’s able to run power between the tackles,” Herbert said. “He’s able to take the hits and deliver the hits,” before adding he wants to do that, too.

The duo are similar sizes. Herbert is listed at 6-6, 236, while Allen checks in at 6-5, 237.

Herbert has not run a ton, although he did his most rushing in 2024. He had 69 carries for 306 yards and a pair of scores.

This past season, Allen ran 102 times for 531 yards and 12 touchdowns.

There isn’t a ton of per-game production needed to be added by Herbert to get into Allen’s territory of usage and yardage — only a couple carries per game gets him there.

The big difference is the touchdowns. Allen finishes drives by himself. In 2023, he had 15 rushing TDs, while Herbert only has 13 rushing touchdowns for his entire five-year NFL career.

Teams are hesitant to let their quarterbacks run a lot. The given QB has to prove to his coaching staff that he can really stay healthy.

But if it’s something Herbert wants, it does seem he has the potential to add more legwork to his game this season. That’s something worth looking out for.
