Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler has hinted Evan Ferguson’s injury recovery will decide whether he leaves the club on loan in January.
The Republic of Ireland international saw his 2023/24 campaign cut short after undergoing ankle surgery before a return in preseason.
Following his summer arrival at the AMEX Stadium, Hurzeler opted for a cautious approach on Ferguson’s comeback to action, with a limited role in their warm up schedule.

That has been mirrored in the Premier League in 2024/25, with just two starts for the 20-year-old, despite being rated as one of the best U21 attackers in the English top-flight.
On the back of a mixed impact in recent weeks, Ferguson has hinted at his willingness to leave on loan in the second-half of the campaign, with Hurzeler also open to a temporary exit.
Rivals Fulham are rumoured to be considering a move to bring him to Craven Cottage, but a fresh ankle issue could block a move, with Hurzeler unclear over when he will return.
“He needs to get back on the pitch, The rumours, I won’t discuss them in public,” he said.
“I think it’s very important the player knows our idea, that we know the idea from the player, and then it’s most important to be honest, to find the right solution for the club and also the player.
“I’m really happy Evan is in our squad and I’m hoping he will be back on the pitch as soon as possible.”
Hurzeler’s comments indicate a conversation has taken place over Ferguson moving on, but he is not convinced over an exit, and Fulham are unlikely to follow up their interest if there is an injury concern.
Brighton start 2025 in 10th place in the EPL rankings, with no win in their last eight league games, and Danny Welbeck is the Seagulls top scorer with just six league goals.
