Victor Wembanyama stats, highlights: Spurs No. 1 pick bounces back strong in second Summer League game

Victor Wembanyama’s Summer League debut may have left fans looking for more, but he made up for it in his second game.

The French phenom was subject to criticism after finishing with just nine points on 2-for-13 shooting from the field in front of a sold-out Thomas & Mack Center on Friday. He responded like the competitor he is, putting his bad debut behind him with a monster showing against the Trail Blazers.

Wembanyama looked more energetic and engaged on both ends of the floor. He attacked the basket with aggression and found a rhythm with his jumper. Despite the loss, the No. 1 overall pick finished with 27 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks while shooting an efficient 9-for-14 from the field.

If you missed any of Wembanyama’s bounce-back second game, The Sporting News had you covered with live updates, highlights and more throughout the contest.

Wembanyama has 11 points, six rebounds and two blocks while shooting 4-for-5 from the field and 3-for-6 at the free throw line. He has not attempted a 3-pointer yet.

8:34 p.m.: Now Victor Wembanyama is starting to attack. He scored six straight points for the Spurs, continuing an impressive sequence with a poster dunk over a number of Trail Blazers defenders.

The Spurs still trail 29-16, but Wembanyama is up to eight points, six rebounds and two blocks on 4-of-5 shooting from the field.

8:32 p.m.: Here comes Wemby. The French phenom just buried an impressive pull-up midrange jumper off of a quick crossover, then tipped an offensive rebound to himself for a putback dunk.

8:28 p.m.: Another blocked 3-pointer for Victor Wembanyama! After swatting Brandon Miller’s 3-point attempt in his debut, Wembanyama did the same thing at the top of the key on a Rayan Rupert 3-point attempt.

End of first quarter: Trail Blazers 19, Spurs 8

8:24 p.m.: It was a low-scoring affair in the first quarter as the Spurs trail the Blazers by 11 points. Victor Wembanyama only played five and a half minutes in the frame, scoring two points to go with four boards.

Portland’s point guard Michael Devoe led all scorers with five points.

8:13 p.m.: Victor Wembanyama’s first shift has come to an end, subbing out with just under four and a half minutes remaining in the first quarter. He went 0-for-2 from the free throw line but buried a midrange jumper to get on the board.
