Being an umpire is hard. No one would argue against that. It’s a thankless job, and there’s a reason people commonly say that if fans don’t know an umpire’s name, then they’re doing good work.
With that in mind, Reggie Drummer became a household name overnight.
He was working behind the plate for Friday night’s college baseball game between Mississippi Valley State and New Orleans. With two outs in the top of the ninth, MVSU’s Davon Mims took a curveball on a 1-1 count that Drummer called a strike,
The pitch was borderline, and possibly low. Mims demonstrably jumped away from the batter’s box and then showed Drummer where he thought the ball crossed the plate, before digging in for the next pitch.
On that next pitch, Drummer decided to show up Mims. The pitch was way out of the strike zone and almost in the dirt. Drummer rang up Mims for Strike 3 to end the game.
“He got rung up on ball 2 and the game is over.” 😮
The ending of the Miss Valley St.-New Orleans game last night was questionable and tempers immediately flared following the strikeout call 😳

New Orleans catcher Jorge Tejeda clearly knew how bad the call was as he immediately restrained Mims and kept him from going at Drummer.
It doesn’t take a longtime baseball viewer to figure out what happened. Drummer didn’t like Mims’ reaction and decided to get back at him. New Orleans was leading 7-3 at the time, so the outcome was more or less already settled.
Why was the umpire suspended for a bad call?
It appears the Southland Conference concluded that Drummer did make it personal. It said in a statement Saturday that the umpire was suspended indefinitely, starting with the final two games of the MVSU-UNO non-conference weekend series. With New Orleans hosting the series, Southland umpires are being used.

The conference said Drummer’s “conduct and actions were deemed detrimental to the Conference and in violation of Section 3 Character and Conduct of the CCA Mechanics Manual for Baseball.”
While “indefinitely” could mean anything, it stands to reason that Drummer and Mims won’t be seeing a lot of each other in the future.
