Puerto Rico World Baseball Classic uniforms: Inside the home & away jerseys & hats for 2023

Basking in the ever-present smile of the tropical sun, Castillo San Felipe del Morro is one of Puerto Rico’s greatest wonders.

The island’s World Baseball Classic outfit is making sure to honor the site, a UNESCO World Heritage landmark that has come to reflect Puerto Rico’s struggle against imperialism. Fixed on the front panels of El Huracán Azul’s ghost-white button-downs is an ocean-blue emblem representing the iconic locale.

That’s just one of many small details that make Puerto Rico’s 2023 World Baseball Classic jerseys all the rage for Puerto Ricans across the diaspora. With a color palette clearly inspired by the country’s storied flag and a major brand stitched onto the chest, it’s clear that Puerto Rico means business on and off the diamond this year.

Here’s what you need to know about the uniforms Javy Baez, Francisco Lindor, Edwin Díaz and more will be rocking in baseball’s biggest international tournament.

For all of Puerto Rico’s WBC success — the 3,515 -square-mile archipelago has made it to the competition’s championship game twice (2013, 2017) — it hasn’t been known for making much of a fashion statement. Baseball teams rarely do, save for those sick retro jerseys MLB releases.

The Island of Enchantment is upping the ante this year, however, as its baseball team looks to break through and capture its first WBC title.

What is Castillo San Felipe del Morro?

Among the many beauties along Puerto Rico’s shores is “El Morro,” a 140-foot fortress that overlooks the Bay of San Juan. Constructed in 1539, the structure was viewed as a tactical dream for European colonizers: its location, coupled with its thick-walled foundation, made it an ideal target for English, Dutch, Spanish and American invaders looking to protect their capitalist interests.

“El Morro” has sustained a lot of damage — from firebombs, mortar shellings and more — in the centuries since its construction. The U.S. military moved its operations to other forts across the commonwealth, opening the door for the cobblestone citadel to become a national park. In 1983, the castle was made a World Heritage Site.

Castillo San Felipe del Morro now stands as a testament to Puerto Rico’s resistance to colonial powers, a throughline the island shares with many in the Global South.

The tower was immortalized in Puerto Rico’s white WBC jerseys, which will be used during the 2023 tournament. When facing off against teams with a similar color palette — think the U.S., for example — Puerto Rico will sport a cherry-red shirt-pants combo that would make waves in a Christian Louboutin collection.

Puerto Rico will deck its players out in a flat-billed, cobalt-blue lid that features the Puerto Rican flag and the letters “PR” stamped across the surface.
