Houston Astros’ star slugger Yordan Alvarez left Houston’s game on Monday night against the Texas Rangers with a left ankle sprain, according to the team.
In the first inning, Alvarez walked in his first at-bat and then came around to score on a groundout. However, the Astros’ slugger rolled his ankle as he crossed home plate, and could barley put any weight on it as he entered the dugout.
After the game, Alvarez was seen exiting the Astros’ clubhouse on crutches, with his left foot in a boot, according to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome. The team’s spokesperson told reporters Alvarez did not want to speak with the media until he knew more about his condition.
Astros’ Get Scary Alvarez Injury Update
Alvarez leaving the clubhouse with a boot is the last thing the Astros wanted to see. Houston dropped to second place in the American League West after Sunday’s loss and needed to turn things around quickly with 12 games left in the season.
The Astros did pick up the win over the Rangers on Monday night, 6-3, but losing Alvarez would be more than a gut-punch to Houston.
The Astros’ slugger will undergo an MRI on Tuesday to determine the severity of his ankle sprain, but Alvarez leaving in a boot is not a good sign.

While the Astros have struggled since the All-Star break, Alvarez has been on fire since he’s returned from the injured list. He’s hit .311 with 3 home runs and 9 RBI.
Alvarez has only played in 48 games this season, as he’s already had two stints on the IL. Tuesday will give the Astros more information on the star’s injury, but the Astros may be looking at a third stint for Alvarez.
With 11 games left in the regular season, and the Astros fighting for a playoff spot, another injury stint for Alvarez would come at the worst time possible.
