Antony transfer fee: How much did Manchester United pay to sign Brazil winger from Ajax?

Antony was Manchester United’s most expensive signing in 2022 as they sought to build a squad capable of competing with the very best under Erik ten Hag.

The Dutch coach had worked with the Brazilian winger at Ajax and a reunion was seen as a move that could help the Red Devils close the gap to neighbours Manchester City and lay down a serious Premier League title challenge for the first time since legendary former manager Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

Things have not quite worked out in England, though. Antony won the Carabao Cup as United enjoyed a promising first season under Ten Hag, but 2023/24 has been far more difficult on the pitch and the FA Cup is their only realistic chance of silverware.

Antony has struggled badly for form, too, while he has also taken time away from the club to respond to serious allegations made by a former girlfriend, which the player strongly denies.

His time in Manchester has prompted great scrutiny on the fact United were willing to pay an enormous sum to sign him in the first place.

Antony transfer fee and contract details

Manchester United signed Antony on August 30, 2022 for an initial fee of €95 million ($95.2m). The total fee could rise to €100m ($100.3m) in add-ons.

The Brazilian’s transfer fee was an Eredivisie record and made him the Red Devils’ second-most expensive signing, ahead of Harry Maguire but behind Paul Pogba.

Antony was handed a contract running until 2027 at Old Trafford with the option for an extra year.

What position does Antony play?

Antony has generally been deployed as a right winger throughout his senior career to date.

He has played on the left wing a handful of times and can also play slightly deeper in midfield if needed.

The Brazilian was exclusively used as a right winger under Erik ten Hag at Ajax during the 2021/22 season — a campaign that saw him score 12 goals and provide 10 assists across all competitions.

At United, he has mostly been used on the right of the attack, although he has sometimes switched to the left flank.

How old is Antony?

Antony signed for United at the age of 22. Born on February 24, 2000, he is now 23 years old.

The attacker made his senior debut as an 18-year-old with Brazilian club Sao Paulo.

Antony then secured his first senior cap with Brazil’s national team at the age of 21.

The Brazilian has most recently been wearing No. 11 at Ajax, while he started his career with No. 39 on his back.

Antony allegations: What happened?

Antony was accused of domestic abuse by a former girlfriend in June 2023. Further allegations of assault were later made by a different woman. Antony has denied all the allegations and told a Brazilian TV station “I never attacked any woman” adding “the truth will come out”.

He was dropped from the Brazil squad due to the allegations that he abused his former girlfriend. The Brazil Football Confederation (CBF) said the claims needed “to be investigated”. In a statement issued in response to an expose by Brazilian outlet UOL, the CBF said it had acted to safeguard all parties involved.

The Brazil international agreed to take a leave of absence from the club while he spoke to police in his homeland and also back in England to respond to the allegations.

On September 29, 2023, United confirmed the player would resume training at their base in Carrington and would be considered for matches in due course. The club stressed this decision would be “kept under review” as police investigations continue.

Antony stats, trophies at Manchester United

Antony has played 67 games for United in all competitions since signing in 2022.
