Nuggets sign free agent G League star to new deal ahead of training camp

The Denver Nuggets are building out their roster depth prior to the start of training camp later this month.

According to longtime NBA insider Chris Haynes, Hazan Sports Management agent Daniel Hazan has revealed that Denver is inking his client, free agent guard Javante McCoy to a new contract.

Terms of the agreement have yet to be divulged, although it is likely to be an Exhibit 10 training camp contract.

Big changes in Denver

The Nuggets have drastically altered their depth around three-time MVP center Nikola Jokic. Denver traded starting small forward Michael Porter Jr. to the Brooklyn Nets for Cam Johnson and traded to acquire reserve center Jonas Valanciunas. The Nuggets also signed veteran guards Tim Hardaway Jr. and Bruce Brown to stunningly team-friendly minimum agreements.

Denver currently has 14 players signed to its 15-man standard roster and all three of its two-way contracts filled. A pair of Exhibit 10 signings, Kessler Edwards and Moses Brown, have been previously announced.

That gives the Nuggets 20 of 21 possible players to trot out at the start of the preseason.

It’s possible that one of Edwards, Brown or Hazan will be elevated to a two-way contract, while one of the club’s present two-way signings, Tamar Bates, Spencer Jones and Curtis Jones, could be named to that 15th and final standard roster opening.

The 27-year-old, who went undrafted in 2022 after a three-time All-Patriot League run with at Boston University, has yet to crack the NBA proper.

McCoy has, however, been plying his trade in the G League on affiliate deals rather than earning more money abroad, in the hopes of landing on an NBA roster. He’s suited up for the South Bay Lakers, the Austin Spurs and the Motor City Cruise (the latter the G League province of the Detroit Pistons).

Across 57 regular season G League bouts with the three organizations, McCoy has averaged 11.1 points on .503/.316/.745 shooting splits, 3.2 boards, 2.6 dimes and 0.6 swipes a night.
